Why would I choose a Ph.D. psychologist for treatment?
Ph.D. Psychologists receive intensive training that integrates scientific research and psychotherapy. A psychologist’s extensive clinical training is typically unmatched by other mental health professionals. The integration of science in psychotherapy improves the quality of care and the outcome of therapy. This unique set of skills allows Ph.D. psychologists to provide scientifically supported treatments to their patients.
How often will I need therapy? How long will I be in treatment?
While many clients experience an improvement in the first several sessions, the client's symptoms and goals will determine the frequency and duration of therapy. After the initial diagnostic meetings, we will collaborate to estimate the number of sessions that might be needed to reach your goals. The length of treatment will depend on the type of problem, how long it has been an issue, your treatment goals, and the work you can do between sessions.
How long does a therapy session take?
Regular therapy sessions last 45-50 minutes. In some cases, individuals may benefit from more intensive treatment or may wish to attend sessions less frequently. Our providers will work with you to design an individualized treatment plan.
What if I am currently taking or need to take psychiatric medications?
Psychologists at PPS work in close collaboration with psychiatrists or other prescribing providers to ensure the best quality of care for our clients. If you do not have a psychiatrist and are interested in taking medications, we are happy to provide a list of local psychiatrists with whom you may consult. If you are already taking medications, we will be glad to collaborate with your prescribing providers.
How much will therapy cost?
PPS treatment fees are comparable to those of other highly skilled psychologists in the San Francisco Bay Area. Contact us for more information on our fees.
Will insurance pay for my treatment?
Please plan to pay session fees by cash, check, or credit card at the time of your appointment. If you have PPO insurance, many of our services may be eligible for full or partial reimbursement as part of your "out of network" benefits. To help facilitate out-of-network claims, PPS will provide you with a statement (sometimes called a "superbill") that includes all of the necessary information to submit to an insurance company. Because insurance benefits do vary, the client is responsible for understanding their insurance benefits and submitting the paperwork needed for reimbursement.
To learn more about your out-of-network coverage for psychotherapy, we recommend you contact your insurance company to ask:
- What coverage is available for out-of-network providers?
- What are the limits on the number of visits per calendar year?
- How much will be reimbursed to you per session (typical 45-minute sessions are billed with the procedure code 90834)?
Is the information discussed in therapy private?
For the most part, therapy is confidential. However, there are a few particular situations in which psychologists have a legal mandate to share information. For example, if you told us that you were in imminent danger, we would need to take steps to help keep you safe. More routinely, a client may sign a written release of information to coordinate care with other professionals.
Where is PPS?
PPS treats patients in two locations - one in Burlingame and another in Pacifica.
